Automatic updates are better than nothing, however only relying on automatic updates can cause more problems than it solves.
  • Installation Delay: There can be a significant delay between the time an update is released and when your system detects that it is available, downloads it, and installs the update.
  • Resource Usage: Checking for updates can be a CPU and Memory intensive process, and often causes noticeable system slowness when it occurs.
  • Incompatibility: Some updates can cause problems with other software that is installed, or prevent hardware from functioning properly.
  • Missed Updates: If the program that is supposed to check for updates stops working, you might not receive a notification that an update is ready to install.
  • Malware Exposure: While it happens rarely, servers that host automatic updates can be used to deliver infected versions of software and install it without your knowledge.
  • Update Blocking: Malicious software on your system can disable automatic update functions or reports incorrect software version information to prevent legitimate updates from being installed.
